The Silence Between Us was written by Alison Gervais.
I loved this story! In the book, a teenager named Mya moves to Colorado with her mother and her brother who has Cystic Fibrosis(CF). Mya, who is Deaf, now has to go to a hearing school where an interpreter accompanies her in all her classes.
This book was absolutely wonderful. The representation of Deaf culture and experiences is very precise. The reality of interpreters was also presented in the story in many different ways.
After just finishing ASL 3 at the college last week, it was perfect to continue to learn more through this story. As someone who wants to be an interpreter, the story also gave me insight on the life of interpreters, even though the story itself is fiction.
Alison Gervais has a truly magical way of telling stories. Her words fly across the pages and pull you into a completely different world. Her way of depicting the Deaf and Hearing communities is wonderful.

I’ve read several books about hearing-impaired youth being mainstreamed and they made me really think about how hard it is for deaf people to be surrounded by people who take the ability to hear for granted. I’m interested it reading this book soon, but the plotline with the brother will probably(?) be really sad. Cystic Fibrosis is a terrible disease.

It really was an amazing book. Just so you know, it is considered rude to call a Deaf individual hearing-impaired. Overall, the plotline was wonderful. There are sad parts, but the book wouldn’t be the same without them.

Having read this I thought it was very informative. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put this short article together. I once again find myself personally spending way too much time both reading and posting comments. But so what, it was still worthwhile!
