Is Writer’s Block Real?

Hey everyone! So, lots have been happening during quarantine. I’ve got multiple writing projects going on, and some exciting school things coming up, but today we’re going to tackle writer’s block!

There is a lot of controversy in the writing community on whether or not writer’s block is real. Some say it is, others think it’s a bunch of bologna. First of all, what is writer’s block? Most people describe writer’s block as being stuck in the writing process, the inability to write or work on a writing project.

Now, call me crazy, but I don’t believe writer’s block exists. At least, not in the way people normally think it does.

There are plenty of times when I get stuck on a project. I can’t figure out how to fix my plot holes, or don’t feel motivated enough to write. I definitely get stuck. But I can always write!

Writer’s block is what people call it when they feel like they can’t write. You may feel like you can’t, but you always can. Your writing might suck, it might be awful, but it’s better to get out the bad writing than wait until you feel like you aren’t stuck. Plot holes don’t fix themselves. Ideas don’t come out of nowhere. You can’t get unstuck without writing.

If you think writer’s block is real and insist on that being so, I encourage you to at least try and change your view of it. Once you believe writer’s block is real, it’s will effect your way of thinking and your writing. Think of it more like this: “writer feels stuck”, not “writer can’t write.” You can always write. And it’s better to write something worth throwing away than not writing at all. That’s how you get better.

So no, I don’t believe writer’s block is real. A person can always write. Don’t let yourself get caught up in the “I have writer’s block, I can’t do anything” attitude. If you let yourself think like that, it will be harder to unthink it. And your writing can suffer more from it. Just keep writing. As Jessica Brody says, “Don’t be afraid to write crap because crap makes great fertilizer.”

  2. BTW, I happen to believe in writers block. I’ve tried everything I can think of to overcome it but when I want to write, nothing comes to me.
